FL now a big player in the battle for the House

Crossposted on dailykos.com and FLAPolitics.com

FL 16, FL 8, FL 22, FL 13 and FL 09 all in play!

Can demographics really help Dems in the Sunshine State? According to The National Journal Hotline:

The growing number of (non-Cuban) Hispanics may also help a Dem there [FL 16 & FL 8]. oss (sic) in FL 22 and (to a lesser degree) FL 13/FL 09 with these two and the state could become a bigger player in the battle for the House than once thought.

When will we all wake up and see that there is a lot of real estate up for grab (in FL and beyond) this year if we just get behind them with time and money?

Take Back FL 09

FL-09 UPDATE: Don't Settle for the Status Quo

When I posted about Phyllis Busansky two weeks ago, I caught some slack because I sent people to her website which was, arguably, in need of a serious update.  Well, her new, improved site is live and there is a lot of information about her position on the issues.

She also had a great quarter and is ready to rock.

So check out the new site (www.BusanskyforCongress.com) and we can continue the dialogue...

Revised from the previous post:
Busansky needs support to fight an incumbant's son (!) in FL-09.  She's very solid (see more about Phyllis in the extended entry) but has an opponent with a war chest supplied by his daddy...

FL-09 Stop the Status Quo

Phyllis Busansky (full disclosure: she's my mother-in-law) needs support to fight an incumbant's son (!) in FL-09.  The DCCC supports her and she's very solid (see more about Phyllis in the extended entry) but has an opponent with a war chest supplied by his daddy...

From the SPTimes :

"I expected opposition in the primary and the general election," said Gus Bilirakis, 42, dismissing talk that Bush's dropping poll numbers might affect his own election prospects.

"He's doing a good job," Bilirakis said of the president, adding that with the war in Iraq, "We're on the right track, and we're doing the right thing."

Recently from the SPTimes:

ONE WONK'S TAKE: University of Virginia political scientist and quote machine Larry Sabato sees Republican-leaning Congressional District 9 as a place where Democrats can make waves.

Here's his take on a Bilirakis vs. Busansky fall election:

"After representing this Tampa-area district for over 24 years, GOP Rep. Mike Bilirakis is retiring this year, and his son, term-limited state legislator Gus Bilirakis, is running to keep this seat safely in Republican hands.

"But this district is not overwhelmingly Republican, and an open seat situation has enticed Democratic former Hillsborough County Commissioner Phyllis Busansky to make the race. If Democrats have a major wind at their backs, this race could be in play.

We can't stand back and let this guy inherit the seat...

My favorite quote of the month!

On the Bible and the Constitution

On Wednesday, March 1st, 2006, in Annapolis at a hearing on the
proposed Constitutional Amendment to prohibit gay marriage, Jamie
Raskin, professor of law at AU, was requested to testify.

At the end of his testimony, Republican Senator Nancy Jacobs said:
"Mr. Raskin, my Bible says marriage is only between a man and a
woman. What do you have to say about that?"

Raskin replied: "Senator, when you took your oath of office, you
placed your hand on the Bible and swore to uphold the Constitution.
You did not place your hand on the Constitution and swear to uphold
the Bible."

The room erupted into applause.
